According to a new report from Donne, Women in Music, of the 20,400 compositions programmed by 111 orchestras across 31 countries in 2023-24, only 7.7% of those were written by women. Vox Femina celebrates the work of women composers and artists with the spirit of change, empowerment, and equality.

Nik’s Notes
Vox Femina is about the important work of female composers and artists. This program features a wide array of voices. Dani Howard’s Argentum glitters with kaleidoscopic flair. NPR Music calls Anna Clyne’s cello concerto DANCE, “full of melodies of undisguised beauty…All linger in the ear, begging to be heard again.” In the early 1900s, African-American composer Florence Price battled a culture which valued women as performers, but not as composers. She wrote, “I have two handicaps - those of sex and race.” And, after the discovery of a substantial collection of her works in 2009, orchestras are turning to her symphonies to headline their programming.
